“What did you need?” Caley asked Oren.

“To talk to you for a moment about the last victims.”

Caley grimaced. “Of course. Do you want to go to my office?”

Oren’s gaze slid to Darren, who seemed lost in his thoughts. “I think it’s better if we do, yes.”

Caley knew he was about to be dragged into a conversation about Darren. He wasn’t looking forward to it, but he’d known it was coming since the first time he’d come to work and had kissed Darren in front of everyone.

It had been the day after they’d made love, when they’d woken up together in Caley’s bed. Darren had been awkward, but Caley had tried to reassure him. He didn’t expect Darren to go back to his own bed or to act like nothing had happened. He didn’t care what other vampires thought. He was an adult, had been for a long time, and he would make his own decisions. If one of those decisions was to be in a relationship with a dhampir vampire hunter, then so be it. He’d been surprised Oren hadn’t dragged him into an office and yelled at him that first day, but he supposed it had only been delayed.

He sighed and turned his attention back to Darren. “I’m done with the autopsy, so once this meeting is over, we can go to the cafeteria.”

That finally got a smile out of Darren. “I don’t think I want anything you guys sell in there.”

Caley grimaced, remembering well how Darren had reacted to that first time they had. “I made sure they had some human food for you. I don’t know what it will be, so I hope it won’t be disgusting, but it won’t be blood. Or we can grab something before going back to the apartment.”

Darren’s expression twisted. “You shouldn’t have done that.”

“Done what?” Caley asked.

“Made things easier for me. I don’t understand why you’re doing it.”

“We’ll have that conversation later, all right?” He leaned closer and kissed Darren’s cheek. “But I’m doing this because I care about you,” he murmured. He leaned back without giving Darren the time to answer. He wasn’t sure he wanted to find out what Darren thought about him.

As far as he knew, he was only convenient. He and Darren lived together right now, and they spent most of their days together when Caley wasn’t in the morgue. No one else in the building wanted to spend any time with Darren, except for Falkner, but he had his own life, and Oren, who only wanted information.

Caley was different. It had been easy for them to slide into a relationship, and Caley couldn’t help but wonder how easy it would be for them to slide out of it, too. He knew he had growing feelings for Darren, but he couldn’t tell whether Darren shared those feelings.

He looked at Oren, gesturing at the morgue doors. “Let’s go in, then.”

Oren grimaced but nodded. Of course, he couldn’t leave without talking to Darren one last time. “I want to see you here when I’m done.
